Boiler repair in Acton and West London

Before you book, try these three things

Plenty of call-outs turn out to be something you can fix yourself in two minutes. These are all safe to check — none of them involve opening the boiler or touching anything gas:

1. Check the pressure gauge on the front of the boiler. If the needle is below 1 bar, low pressure is probably why it has stopped. Your boiler manual shows how to top it up using the filling loop underneath.
2. Check the thermostat and the timer. Flat batteries in a wireless room thermostat are one of the most common causes of “the heating just stopped”. Check the programmer is not still on a summer setting.
3. Check the fuse and the switch. Look at the fused spur next to the boiler and your consumer unit for a tripped breaker.

If none of that works, ring us. Please don’t take the cover off the boiler. Only a Gas Safe registered engineer may legally work on the gas side, and the risk is carbon monoxide, which you cannot smell.

Faults we deal with most

• No hot water, or hot water but no heating (often a diverter valve)
• Boiler locks out and needs resetting again and again
• Pressure dropping over days or weeks — usually a small leak or a failed expansion vessel
• Error or fault code showing on the display
• Banging, kettling or gurgling noises
• Pilot light or ignition failure
• Leaks from the boiler or nearby pipework
• Radiators cold while the boiler runs
• Frozen condensate pipe — common in the first hard frost

How a repair visit works

1. You ring and describe what’s happening. We’ll often have a fair idea on the phone, and we’ll tell you the call-out charge before we come.
2. We ring again before we set off, so you’re not waiting in all day.
3. We diagnose the fault and tell you what it will cost to put right. You decide before we do any work.
4. We carry common spares, so many faults are fixed on the first visit. If a part has to be ordered we’ll tell you honestly how long it will take.
5. We explain what was wrong before we leave, and we’re happy to explain it to a son or daughter on the phone as well.

When a repair isn’t worth it

If your boiler is old and the repair costs a large share of a replacement, we’ll say so plainly — and we’ll also say when it isn’t worth replacing yet. We don’t work on commission and we’re not trying to sell you a boiler. See new boiler installation if replacement turns out to be the sensible option.

Can you come today?

If you have no heating or no hot water we will always try. Acton, Chiswick, Ealing, Hammersmith and Shepherd’s Bush are closest to us so those are usually quickest. We will tell you honestly on the phone if we cannot make it.

Do you work on all makes of boiler?

Worcester Bosch, Vaillant, Baxi, Ideal, Viessmann, Potterton, Glow-worm, Alpha, Ferroli, Ariston and the rest. Tell us the make and model when you ring and we can bring the likely parts with us.

My boiler is showing a fault code. What does it mean?

Codes differ between manufacturers — the same code means different things on a Vaillant and a Worcester. Read it out when you ring and we will look it up against the right manual rather than guess.

Is it worth repairing an old boiler?

Sometimes yes. A well-looked-after boiler of twelve or fifteen years can be worth a sensible repair. We will give you the repair cost and the replacement cost and let you choose.
