Period houses need a different approach

Chiswick and Bedford Park are largely late-Victorian and Edwardian, and that changes the job considerably compared with a modern flat:

• Bedford Park is one of the earliest garden suburbs and much of it is a conservation area. That restricts where a boiler flue can be positioned, particularly on a front elevation. We raise this at the quote stage rather than discovering it on installation day.
• Large family houses around Grove Park, Chiswick Mall and the Glebe Estate often have system boilers with hot water cylinders rather than combis — the right choice when several bathrooms are in use at once.
• Unvented cylinders are common in the bigger houses here. Pressurised systems such as a Megaflo legally require a separate G3 qualification on top of Gas Safe registration — we hold it, so we can install, commission and service them. Worth asking anyone else you call, because many domestic engineers cannot legally touch one.
• Old pipework in solid floors and original cast-iron radiators — both beautiful and both worth keeping, but they need careful handling when a system is flushed or a boiler changed.
• Flats above the shops on Chiswick High Road and Turnham Green Terrace, where access and flue routing are often the awkward part.
